Look, it's a family name. My grandfather's first name, my brother's middle name. Even an Aunt Gustha, the female form, although everyone called her Gusty.

I'll let you pronounce the "v" as a "v" and not as an "f" which is how it really should be pronounced.

But for the love of all that's holy, the "u" is short, as in book, or should, not like GOOSE.

I hope this storm dies down quickly, both for the sake of the people in its path, but also because Goose-tav is giving me a brain tumor, one cell at a time.

I had a broadcast instructor back in the day when I was at DINFOS (the Defense Information School, where the military trains its journalists) who used to blow a gasket when people said Iran or Iraq.

"It's 'IH-Ron' or 'IH-Rock. It is not 'EYE-RAN' OR 'EYE-RACK.' "

So what I'm saying is, "Good luck with that."

I just thought I'd let you know that during the prayers of the faithful at Mass this morning, our pastor, Fr. Foley, pronounced Gustav correctly, including the "f" for "v." I silently cheered him on, even though his voice usually drives me up the clerestory -- he sounds like Tom Daschle now with extra estrogen.
