Yankee Conspiracy
Aug. 5th, 2008 09:19 amSo Mother Nature conspired with her minions to make me hate the DC even more. A visit up north where, as usual, I was hit with a visceral need to see rocks more often...craggy, jagged surfaces interspersed with rolling hills and winding roads and trees and sweeping grassy swales. Instead of flat, concrete, manicured green, flat, flat...you know.
Despite Her best attempts to deliver a breezy, warm but relatively not humid summer weekend, cleverly raining on us only when we had already decided that we were done with the Mystic Seaport and it was really time to head to Lenny & Joe's for the Purist Lobster Roll...I do remember that while it's NEVER as bad as down here, that this was not typical.
But golly, I do miss the breezes, the less than omigod-I-can't-breathe heat and humidity. Being just a 20 minute drive from sand and salt air. Having a backyard full of deer and turkey and redtails. (And ticks and biting flies and needing to bang the front door when you go out with the dogs at 3am so that the skunks do not get surprised.) I know.
But after a weekend of having your parents cater to you, having a cookout with old friends, getting half-bombed on Mojitos, birthday cake, family croquet, watching your nieces perform in a circus show, the charm of a 4-H fair, hanging out in a town where everyone knows you -- which for a weekend is fun and friendly....it's hard to come home to a house that's littered outside with construction detritus, cat puke and hairballs inside. With a lawn that need to be mowed, a clothes dryer that broke right before you left, and frankly, all of the stuff that you should have been home dealing with, instead of blithely tripping up north.
Don't mind me while I indulge in a half-day of "I hate my life" before I pull my big girl panties on and deal with it.
