It's that time of year again....
Oct. 23rd, 2008 09:23 amIt's Halloween and time for Scary Perry! Friday, October 31st.
Scary Perry is what happens when a street shuts down to car traffic on Halloween night, decorates all of the houses, populates the street with characters and hosts thousands of trick or treaters of all sizes.
You're welcome to attend -- although I ask that you do NOT crosspost or otherwise publicize this event. We are NOT looking to increase attendance at this event, but thanks anyway. Did I mention that I will KILL you if I find mention of this event on a message board or other public forum?
You can come costumed or not...no, wait, you're MY friends. Costume whores, everyone of you. What was I thinking? You can wander the street, you can sit and give out candy, you can hang out in the yard and party. I only ask that you be willing to sit a shift here or there giving out the candy so that I can be out managing the street.
So's you know, it's a PG-rated event and slightly scary is as frightening as we get. Our target audience is little kids and we don't try to scare or gross them out. On the other hand, if you can scare an adult or teenager, go for it, the little kids love THAT.
Our house is your home base -- we'll have coolers, soda, water, a big ol' pot of chili and other food, and of course, candy. You can store personal items inside, use the facilities, etc. But we're pretty busy setting up, so for Pete's sake, don't show up needy for attention. If you have the day off, or want to show up early to beat the traffic, I'll put you to work.
We go live at 6pm and the show is over by 9:30pm, plenty of time for you to head out to a more "adult" party or get a good night's sleep, whichever is more your style. I will kick you out by 9:45. Seriously. Pack your stuff and begone. We have to get over to the neighborhood potluck before we fall asleep.
Just so you're not misled: this isn't a party we put on for our friends; its' an event we put on for the community -- particularly the kiddie crowd who's there to trick or treat. But what the heck, we now have so many friends who show up, we're trying to accomodate you and if you all try to hang out in the front yard, you wind up blocking props, lighting, the kid traffic flow.
So, this year, we're turning the side yard into a cemetery. It will evolve over several years and this year might be a bit rudimentary -- but you can stand out there, chat, drink, visit all you want, since the deck is losing its integrity and won't be replaced until after Halloween. So, the party scene will be out there, in the cemetery. Where you can hang out. Dressed as a dead thing. I mean, I may as well put you to work while you're having fun.
Yes. You've just been promoted to "Prop".
We're shooting for a Victorian feel in the cemetery, so you can come dressed in that period and be alive, or be a dead version of whatever you want, dead pirate, dead clown, zombie, undertaker, whatever else will hang out in a cemetery. (And you don't HAVE to hang out there. Some of you are happier handing out candy to the rugrats and crumbgrinders. And that's cool.)
We won't be doing pirates in the front yard this year...Infestation will be the closest we get to a theme. And, this is one Halloween event where you can cheat and where your rengarb and no one will make fun of you. Well, for wearing your rengarb. We ALWAYS make fun of people.....

Date: 2008-10-23 05:08 pm (UTC)No, a noose is not too scary. Most costumes aren't too scary -- it's what you do that tends to push the envelope -- running at people waving ooey-gooey props, sort of thing.
Like our mad scientist is clearly using fake papier mache body parts, when he "pulls" out someone's heart -- as opposed to going for something that really looks like a heart and has got a little pump in it, so blood is spurting...
We got too close to the line when we put up a series of gibbets and hung our dummies from them, putting burlap over the dummies heads (because they were either really lame looking or had no heads to begin with) but we forgot that the dummies are dressed in our cast-offs. At night, those jeans and rugby shirted "corpses" dangling from nooses were just a little too...
But someone walking around with a noose around her neck...that's cool.
