terribleturnip: (willow)
Willow and Percy like to chase bunnies; I'm sure that comes as no surprise. Although, in truth it's not really chasing. They like CHARGE the bunny and make it run. Then just stand there and watch it. If it stops within view, they'll charge again, then stop and watch it run away.

I can't decide whether this is just them taking retirement very seriously, or whether, in their pointy greyhound heads, they think that their job is to protect the neighborhood from bunny incursion.

In either case, I amuse myself by spotting a bunny up ahead of us -- because if it's not moving, it doesn't really exist to a greyhound -- and wait until I think we're close enough and say "Willow, do you see the bunny?" Which causes both of them, but especially whirl around frantically, ears pricked, tails up, chuffing wildly, looking for the bunny. Of course if the bunny continues to stay still, they still probably won't see it -- but the minute it moves, they're right after it. Jumping stiff-legged, barking. And the bunny runs. And we all stand there on alert and watch it, making sure that it leaves the premises. Or gets out of eyesight, which again, to a greyhound means it no longer exists.

But sometimes I screw up and say the word "bunny" just a little too early. And the dogs go into major alert mode, whirling around, jumping, all excited and never see the bunny -- who quickly and quietly makes off under a bush. And then I feel badly, because the dogs think it's a false alarm....premature bunnilation. Don't you hate that?
